Centurion Inn - White Wine List

White

By the Glass or buy the bottle!
(with notes by ‘The Og’)

We hope you like wine … WE CERTAINLY DO – as does ‘The Og’, whom we employ in maintaining our wine lists.

The Og is a shambly, dusty creature that shuffles happily about damp cellars and musty storerooms – generally with a glass in his hand – seeking out what he may.

He finds wines of all different types from all over the world – and he is VERY good at scooping up bargain bin-ends and the like at very attractive prices; in all cases the benefits are passed on to our customers.

You will find the wines listed by price in ascending order, rather than by country / region; if you know how much you want to spend, just ‘go there’ and see what there is. Life is too short for cheap wine – so we don’t sell it. But you will find some good wine being sold cheap. And some very good wine that’s not so cheap. It is all EXCELLENT VALUE however – as we think you will agree.

Certainly The Og thinks so… Cheers!

1. Libertad Chenin / Sauvignon Blanc, 2000 (Argentina)

High altitude ‘proven’ grapes produce a most satisfactory blend with lots of lip-smacking citrus. A remarkably good wine – which reflects the winemakers’ excellent skills, at a very good price – which reflects the fact that Argentina doesn’t have an economy any more! Enjoy!

per glass - £1.40 the bottle - £5.00

2. Domaine d’Esperance – Cuvee d’Or 1998/99 (France)

We got this as a ‘clear-out’ lot from a London merchant – hence the price. This is not cheap wine – this is very good wine being sold cheap! The south of France at its’ fragrant best in this mini Chablis - an elegant, estate bottled gem with loads of fresh citrus. The perfect aperitif – or very pleasant with light salads and fish.

per glass - £2.00 the bottle - £8.00

3. Two Vines Verdhelho Chardonnay 2001, (Australia)

A Silver Medallist at London, 2002 this wine is light and fresh with bags of spiced fruit.
Needs to be cellar-cool for maximum enjoyment, but does not need chilling as this stifles some nice, subtle undertones. Great with fish or ‘on its’ own’.

per glass - £2.50 the bottle - £10.00

4. Undurraga Lazo Chardonnay 2001(Chile)

Chile hit the ‘big time’ in wine production – and after a quality start to exporting seemed to lose its’ way a tad – you never quite know what a bottle of Chilean wine is going to taste like!
This one is gorgeous - coming from a family who were pioneers in winemaking over a century ago.
French grape varieties and wooden barrels (from a French cooper) give a rich bouquet and flavour. Fresh fruit and a good round finish.

per glass - £2.75 the bottle - £11.00

5. Domaine Michel Thomas 2001 Sancerre (France)

An intensely aromatic and concentrated Sauvignon from Michel and Laurent Thomas who consistently produce some of the finest wines in the Loire region.
The Domaine is set in the chalk-rich hills north of the village of Sancerre. The ’01 offering has vibrant, floral freshly cut grass and herb scents with crisp lemon citrus flavours – and that wonderful ‘gunflint’ aftertaste so typical of Sancerre.

Wonderful with anything light – or if you just fancy something nice …

per glass - £4.50 the bottle - £18.00

6. Les Pargues, 2000, Domaine Servin Chablis (France)

Serious single vineyard Chablis – delightfully smooth and with a steely crispness that delights the palate.
The Servin family have long renowned and highly acclaimed growers – and 2000 was, quite simply, a superb vintage. The Og’s advice is “get stuck in”!

per glass - £5.00 the bottle - £20.00

7. Champagne – V. Testulat Brut Carte d’Or a Epernay NV (France)

A superb non-vintage Champagne of bright, pale gold. Green apples on the nose and crisp acidity. A wine of great finesse and personally recommended by The Og who first acquired it with a view to placating senior management; it met with a degree of success!

per glass - £5.00 the bottle - £20.00
