In 1974, it was discovered that part of the building stood on the actual route of Hadrian’s Wall (right) - a UNESCO World Heritage site and in the surrounding area are many places of great historical interest. Hadrians Wall
     
The Roman site of Birdoswald (left) is not far away. There you can see remains of the Roman frontier system within the fort and surroundings. The east gateway is probably the best preserved along the line of the Wall.
       
Vindolanda and Housesteads roman forts are also all within easy reach by car.

Lanercost Priory
, a historic and living church dating from 1166, is only a short drive away. Today it serves as both a parish church and also a venue for music and craft events. (left)

Talkin Tarn (left) is a popular beauty spot where many recreational and sporting activities take place throughout the year.
